Steak Glop
Equipment
- Pioneer Brown Gravy Mix, 1.61 oz – Walmart.com
- Minute Ready to Serve White Rice Long Grain Cups, 4.4 Oz, 2 Ct – Walmart.com
- Great Value Steamable Whole Kernel Corn, Frozen, 12 oz – Walmart.com
- Fresh Sliced White Mushrooms, 16 oz – Walmart.com
- Great Value Steamable California Style Vegetable Mix, Frozen, 12 oz – Walmart.com
- Beef Stew Meat Family Pack, 2.15 – 3.0 lb – Walmart.com
Ingredients
- 2.5 – 3 lb. Family Sized Stew Meat
- 24 oz. Frozen California Style Vegetables
- 12 oz. Frozen Corn
- 16 oz. Fresh Sliced Mushrooms
- 8 oz. 4 cups White Rice
- 2 cups Beef Gravy
- 1 TBSP of Chicago Steak Seasoning
Instructions
- Brown Stew Meat in Electric Skillet or Skillet on Stove top. I set the electric skillet to about 250, so I'd say Medium Low Heat. Season with Chicago Steak Seasoning.
- Add vegetables: California Style Veggies, Corn, Mushrooms
- Cover and cook until meat is done and vegetables are warm and tender (about 20 minutes).
- Add 2 cups of gravy worth of gravy packets. Most gravy packets are 1 cup per packet, but some of them make 2 cups. There should be enough liquid in there to satisfy requirements but correct liquid (by adding water if necessary) for the instructions on the packet.
- While the meat is cooking (or in between tasks above), cook the rice. Microwave the rice. I usually do one cup at a time for a minute.
- When all is cooked, pile one cup of rice on a plate or bowl, then top with meats and veggies.
Notes
Where did I get this Quick & Easy Dinner Recipe?
My ex husband. After the divorce. He frickin knew how to cook the ENTIRE time. But the kids love it, and it’s really so easy to make, kind of a lazy dinner, so perfect weeknight meal. Those are keywords I know but also that’s what this meal means to me.
I mean he just invented this steak glop off the top of his head. 14 YEARS!
6 Ingredients for Steak Glop
Really, you can kind of make this up as you go. I’m sure some nights, my ex changes it up a bit. I don’t too much because the kids like every ingredient in it, though I will say some nights, we don’t do as much gravy for health reasons.
- Stew Meat
- Bag of Frozen California Style Vegetables
- Bag of Frozen Corn
- Fresh Mushrooms
- Rice
- Gravy
Quick & Easy 4 Step Process
There’s always the easy way to do things, and the hard way to do things. I flip flop depending on the amount of actual sleep I get.
Step 1: Brown the Stew Meat
I like to use an electric skillet because I can fit more food into it and cook a little more even than using a chicken fryer skillet on the stovetop, but the second option also equally works.
Just brown the meat for a minute. You can add some Olive Oil or Butter if you’d like (especially if you’re not using non-stick).
Step 2: Add the Veggies
Really, just dump the bags of frozen veggies and fresh mushrooms into the pot.
Step 3: Cook the Rice
I pick microwaveable rice so I can just microwave it. So microwave each little cup of rice for a minute or as instructed on the package.
Step 4: Add Gravy
Once the meat and veggies are cooked, add gravy packet(s) and any water you need to add to the current liquid that’s already in there. Mix up lightly so as not to decapitate the broccoli.
Slightly More Complicated Alternative
Instead of adding all the gravy directly to the meat and veggies, you can microwave the gravy in a microwave safe tupperware bowl and spoon it on. It’s still a quick and easy dinner recipe even if you complicate it.
Keto Low Carb Version – Reduce Carbs
The recipe card shows an automated nutrition info, but if I figure it out by hand based on the ingredients linked in the recipe card, you are looking at 70g net carbs. Not a good look.
You can switch up the rice with cauliflower rice. Reduce gravy to one cup of gravy instead of 2 cups. And here you’d be looking at 30g net carbs. Still not where you want to be to hit ketosis, but a better option for people with diabetes who are counting carbs.
So, to reduce carbs to something more Keto, you want to…
- Switch to Cauliflower Rice
- Reduce Gravy to 1 C. instead of 2 cups.
- Remove Corn entirely
And that would put you at 14g Net Carbs
…including the NET CARBS of 3g per 3 oz of California Style Veggies, 2g per 3 oz of mushrooms, 4g per 1/4 c. of gravy, 2g for 1/4 bag of Cauliflower Rice.
Note, if you do McCormick’s Low Sodium gravy (30% less sodium), you will be looking at 3 g net carbs per 1/4 cup, so you would save 2 carbs if you go 1/2 cup of gravy per serving bringing it down to 12g Net Carbs.

Reduce Sodium
The gravy of my choice has about 350 mg of sodium per 1/4 cup of gravy with this recipe looking at 1/2 cup of gravy per serving.
Now the Heinz in a Jar Beef Gravy is a little less per same 1/4 cup to 300 mg.
The McCormick Low Sodium has 230 mg per 1/4 cup.
But the best is Trio Low Sodium that is 130 mg per 1/4 cup but beware, net carbs is 5 carbs per 1/4 cup. It also seems Walmart only has a packet that makes a gallon of this gravy at a time.
